Job Description

Whistler Olympic Park is a world-class destination for outdoor recreation activities & Nordic sports, located just south of Whistler in the stunning Callaghan Valley. Established for the 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games, the Park’s incredible facilities are now enjoyed by both high-performance athletes and recreational guests alike.

Biathlon Program Instructor delivers coaching, instructional and educational cross-country ski and biathlon programs to guests of Whistler Olympic Park (WOP). Responsibilities include assisting selection of products or services appropriately meeting their needs by sharing information to educate, engage, and demonstrate a high level of product knowledge in the delivery of an exceptional guest experience. Seasonal role requires the flexibility to assist the team with other activities or initiatives including the ability to work weekends, evenings and holidays.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

• Instruct individuals and groups of all ages in Nordic programs, cross-country ski lessons (classic and skate), biathlon, snowshoeing and other activities as directed
• Knowledge of WSL product and services to assist promotion and cross-promotion interacting with guests
• Develop a high level of product knowledge to promote WSL products and services including day-tickets, season passes, instructional programs, and rental equipment
• Follow documented procedure and safe delivery of Biathlon programs including:
o Manage and maintain range, firing line, rifles, and targets in a safe and efficient manner
o Act as Range Safety Officer when assigned to biathlon programming and range activities Educate and instruct guest participation in programs
o Carry out range maintenance and manual grooming as directed by Sport Operations
o Ensure preparation and maintenance of program equipment
o Efficiently keep to a scheduled itinerary
• Ensure a safe and inviting environment for activity participants and guests
• Adhere to safe operating procedures within the functional areas
• Foster a strong culture of health & safety; work with Human Resources and Safety to ensure all WorkSafeBC and Technical Safety BC requirements are met
• Professionally handle guest queries and concerns
• Collaboratively liaise with all venue colleagues including Guest Services
• Work cooperatively with clubs, user groups, and volunteers to deliver Nordic Sport School programming
• Assist in general up-keep of the Sport School areas, including the daily set up of indoor/outdoor equipment
• Assist team with the execution of special events as required
• Preparation and tear-down of instructional and coaching areas
• Carry out snowshoe trail grooming and maintenance as directed
• Interact with volunteers to ensure their inclusion in department team

• Assist team with other duties as assigned or required, including operation of the rental shop, guest services, and operational requirements such as snow clearing
Administration
• Maintain individual/group attendance and achievement records
• Assist with issuing and processing of rental equipment and retail shop products
• Accurately compile and summarize information as requested

Position Requirements
Education/Experience
• Biathlon coach, marksmanship, firing range, or firearms safety instructor experience required
• Cross-country ski experience with the ability to perform both classic and skate techniques preferred
• Current PAL certification (Firearms Possession & Acquisition License) required
• Satisfactory criminal record check is mandatory prior to commencement of employment
• One or more of the following certifications is required:
o Canada Association of Nordic Ski Instructors (CANSI)
o Cross Country or Biathlon Canada’s National Coaching Certification (NCCP):
 Community Coaching Introduction (ICC), Community Coach (CC) or higher
 Biathlon Bronze Coach, Silver Coach, Gold Coach, OR Competition Development
o International training/experience equivalent to the above qualifications
• Experience with bolt action rifles required
• Previous experience working in a customer service-oriented position required
• First Aid qualifications preferred
• Knowledge of the Olympic Nordic disciplines (cross-country skiing, biathlon, ski jumping, and Nordic combined) an asset
• Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License preferred
• Valid BC Class 4 Unrestricted Driver’s License an asset
• Experience volunteering and/or working in a volunteer organization such as a not-for-profit sport organization an asset

Skills
• Experience or skills in cross country skiing, snowshoeing, biathlon, and / or ski jumping
• Ability to safely guide participants through ski lessons and physical activities
• Excellent “in person” customer service, communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to follow range protocol and maintain a safe firearms working environment
• Excellent listening and comprehension skills required
• Ability to establish quick rapport to build relationships and network
• Ability to work well both independently with minimum direction, and as part of a team
• Willingness to assist other team members (at times outside of the department) as needed and requested
• Passion for exceptional customer service is essential

Physical Requirements
• Reliable winter transportation as WOP is not serviced by public transit
• Ability to work outdoors for long periods of time in variable winter weather conditions
• Ability to stand, crouch, or kneel for long periods of time
• Must be able to lift up to 50lbs

Salary/Wage

$22.00 to $28.00 per hour dependent on certification(s)
