Whistler Sliding Centre is a world-class bobsleigh, skeleton and luge facility for athletes of all levels, and a legacy venue of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Public visitors can try the sports in unique passenger bobsleigh and public skeleton rides. Aspiring athletes and recreational participants from novice to advanced level can learn to slide in sport programs in luge, skeleton and bobsleigh. As we are a non-profit organization, all proceeds from public programs go directly towards growing sport and supporting sliding athletes.

Chief Engineer, reporting to the Managing Director WSC, is responsible for operating and maintaining the Refrigeration Plant and building systems in compliance with the standards and laws set forth in the province of BC and in accordance with our mission, vision and values.  Regular Full Time position requires flexibility with other activities or initiatives including working evenings and weekends as required.

Responsibilities

Managerial

• Develop and manage an annual operations plan, capital maintenance plan, capital replacement plan, and budget for the operations functional area and ensures that all work is conducted in accordance with the approved plans and budget, according to established financial procedures
• As part of the WSC management team, actively participate in the development of the WSC business plan and new business activities
• Manage all operational resources pertaining to the Refrigeration Plant, site security, water quality and building maintenance
• Operationally manage all contracts pertaining to the WSC Refrigeration Plant, WSC building /facility systems, security and water quality
• At all times, ensure that the activities of the Refrigeration Plant operations at WSC are guided by the WSL vision, mission and values and in accordance with the Business Plan and Annual Operating Plans
• Responsible for managing and providing leadership and direction to the Refrigeration Plant team according to established HR procedures with emphasis on the following areas:
  • Recruitment and selection
  • Orientation and ongoing training
  • Performance management
  • Succession planning
• Manage the information flow to WSC management team with regard to the functional area
• Work with the Manager, Track Operations to ensure the effective operation of the track and associated buildings / facility
• Make decisions in the best interest of WSC with an understanding and consideration of the overall organization interest
• Assist with other special initiatives as directed
• Flexibility to work weekends and evenings
• Carry out Whistler Sport Legacies’ customer service philosophy AIM:  All Interactions Matter
• Assist team with other duties as assigned or required

Technical

• Ensure Refrigeration Plant and building operations are performed safely and efficiently in accordance with municipal, provincial and federal regulations and laws including but not limited to Work Safe BC and Technical Safety BC
• Review and update the venues Exposure Control Plan and Emergency Response Plan annually
• Consult, cooperate with, and support the work of the Joint Health and Safety Committee, Work Safe BC, and Technical Safety BC
• Develop and perform preventative maintenance duties and routines as required for all venue Fire, Security, and Refrigeration Plant monitoring systems
• Foster and support a “safety first” culture in the plant and ensure all staff adhere to safety procedures
• Primary contact and responsible for software / hardware system pertaining to QCA Scada Controls
• Oversee the development and implementation of operations policies and procedures

Leadership and culture

• Champion all Whistler Sport Legacies corporate policies, procedures, and contribute to the development of Whistler Sliding Centre policies and procedures
• Lead by modeling Whistler Sport Legacies values
• Take personal accountability and responsibility for actions; take initiative to find creative solutions to problems or issues
• Positive representative of Whistler Sport Legacies, both internally and externally
• Responsible for managing and providing leadership to colleagues and volunteers with emphasis on the following areas according to established HR procedures:

  • Creation of departmental policies and procedures
  • Performance management and conflict resolution

  • Management of appropriate partners/vendors

• Degree, diploma or certificate in Power Engineering from recognized institution with a minimum qualification of Refrigeration Plant Operator in the province of BC
• 5+ years of relevant experience as a refrigeration mechanic, operator or Chief Engineer
• Complete working knowledge of a Refrigeration Plant, including direct ammonia refrigeration systems
• Experience reading and interpreting diagrams, P&ID’s, logic diagrams and OEM schematics
• Wear and work while wearing a full face respirator mandatory
• Small water operator certification an asset
• Journeyman designation in any trade an asset
• Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training an asset
• Knowledge in the operation and maintenance of high voltage switch gear
• Knowledge operating troubleshooting and minor repairs of HVAC equipment an asset
• Valid BC Class 5 driver’s license mandatory
• Valid BC Class 4 driver’s license an asset

Skills

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as good interpersonal skills
• Strong skills and working knowledge of MS Office programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
• Keen and can-do attitude
• Ability to perform in high pressure, multi-tasking environments
• Self-directed entrepreneurial spirit is essential
• Flexible and adaptable to work efficiently in variety of settings
• Willingness to assist other team members, including outside the department, as needed and requested

Languages

• Fluency in English required

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions
• Ability to stand for long periods of time
• Able to lift up to 50 lbs
• Comfortable working in confined spaces and elevated heights
• Ability to distinguish colours for monitoring alarms on all equipment, tools, and computers
