Position: Future Science Leaders Facilitator – Engineering
Reports to: Year 2 Program Specialist, Future Science Leaders
Science World is a BC-based charitable organization that engages the people of British Columbia in STEAM literacy. Our mission is to ignite wonder and empower dreams through science and nature. All Science World employees embody our values: Curious, Playful, Inclusive, Relevant and Collaborative. We also work with our employees to develop our identified core competencies at all levels of the organization.
Future Science Leaders is an in-person multi-year program for students who excel in science and technology. This position relates to the second of three possible years in the program.
Position Description:
In the role of the Engineering Facilitator, you will work closely with the Program Specialist to plan activities as well as supervise and mentor the second-year students as they learn skills and complete self-directed projects. Supported by the Future Science Leaders team, you will be responsible for equipment and consumables management, the planning, preparation, and delivery of lessons, student work evaluation, and regular reporting.
This position requires an enthusiastic, organized, independent, and creative individual with a passion for mentoring enthusiastic high school students in computer programming and/or engineering. Flexibility and confidence are required to work with the highly collaborative and dynamic facilitation team. This will require 10 hours per week, with the sessions occurring Wednesdays after school.
The job goes from August to the end of the beginning of June. There are winter and spring program breaks with lighter workloads. The general structure of the program is skill-building activities from September through December followed by student-driven projects from January through May. Students will display their work at Science World events. Therefore, there will be more teaching in the fall whereas the independent student work requires more mentorship on student-driven projects.
Key Responsibilities:
· Work with Program Specialist to plan and prepare skill-building lessons
· Ensure all required supplies are in place for weekly sessions in conjunction with the program specialist
· Work with co-facilitators to deliver lessons and manage the classroom
· Prepare and mentor students for their student-driven projects
· Communicate weekly assignments and feedback to students
· Review student papers for the eSTEAMed journal, https://www.futurescienceleaders.com/
· Attend program meetings
· Document student progress, program delivery, and provide reflections on lessons
Do you feel you haven’t met every requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of colour are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification in the job posting.
Science World is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment so we strongly encourage you to apply even if you don't believe you meet every single qualification outlined, as you may have transferable skills that would be an asset to our team.
It is conditional on pre-employment at Science World to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
