January 21, 2021
With the start of the new year, I am acutely aware of my own jumble of emotions—a combination of both optimism and intimidation as we face the future. I’m optimistic for the future because we continue to learn more about the COVID-19 virus. I’m hopeful about the vaccination program rollout’s ambitious goal of giving all Canadians access to the vaccine by September 2021.
At the same time, I also feel intimidated because the negative impacts of the virus still aren’t behind us, and we’re working in an ever-changing environment with new variant strains emerging. We’re still seeing major industry cuts in critical sectors – Air Canada’s most recent changes to their flights and layoffs come to mind – and seeing how businesses of all sizes are still suffering. It makes me wonder what will be left of the industries I’ve come to care a great deal about in my time at go2HR.
How We’re Supporting You
I have no doubt the year ahead will be different than the previous year. In some respects, I believe 2021 may be easier year simply because we know more – and knowledge is power. But I’m also aware that it may be harder. We’ve started the new year with fewer tourism and hospitality businesses in British Columbia, and those who are still active have more demands and access to fewer resources than before. Uncertainty still lies ahead of us all, and the road to recovery is a long one and everchanging.
Our team at go2HR continually looks for ways to support businesses with human resources, health and safety, and training needs in the immediate and short term, offering services such as:
- One-on-one consultation services to businesses on their COVID-19 safety plans, now expanded to include all tourism and hospitality businesses within British Columbia
- Offering – and expanding – COVID-19-friendly training options for SuperHost, Service for All, FOODSAFE and Foundations for Workplace Safety
- Continually improving our digital resources and communications
- Continually delivering webinars to topical areas such as restart safely and conflict resolution
Mental Health & Wellness Check In
Our people are the most important element to our industry, and we have all felt the effects of COVID-19 in a multitude of ways. Employees have moved on. The tourism and hospitality sectors are unfairly perceived as a ‘unsafe, uncertain place to work.’ Skills have atrophied and the environment in which we operate and interact in has changed drastically. The decisions we’ve made to keep our businesses afloat can be heady and I know we’re all facing our own personal challenges due to COVID-19.
To that end, go2HR’s experts have curated mental health resources for everyone to use, regardless of whether you’re in tourism and hospitality or not. During these unprecedented times, we need to be extra vigilant of one another. There are many ways to reach out to your staff. As a supervisor, you have the power to be flexible and a space to practice being mindful of circumstances. As a colleague, you’re able to offer support to your team and coworkers.
I’d like to take this moment to encourage you to take one more step to ask your employees how they’re really doing. Don’t just accept ‘okay’ and ‘fine’ as token answers – we’re finding ourselves in a crazy, challenging moment in history. Let’s be honest, we’re all struggling with something. Take the time to be curious about your team. As Canadians, we’re compassionate, caring and considerate people. Let’s continue to show and enhance our support for one another, even with a small daily gesture. It really can make a big difference.
I’m always open to hearing thoughtful dialogue and questions from you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out.
