Job Description

Whistler Sliding Centre is a world-class bobsleigh, skeleton and luge facility located above Whistler Village on the side of Blackcomb Mountain. True to its mission to grow sport, the venue is not only used for training and competition by athletes from beginner to world class level, but it is also the only place in Canada where public can try bobsleigh and skeleton to slide like an Olympian with no experience required.

Refrigeration Operator is part of a dedicated team responsible for the operation and maintenance of Whistler Sliding Centre’s Ammonia Refrigeration Plant and facilities. Working with Facility Operations, Track Operations, and the Guest Services departments, the Operator is part of a team that ensures a world class training and competition venue.

Seasonal winter 2024 / 2025 role has varied rotation including day/night shifts with casual, part time or full time availability. Flexibility to work weekends and evenings/nights is required.

Winter season 2024 / 2025 commences October 2024 – ask about affordable staff accommodation in our new facility for full time role.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

• Ensure plant operations are performed safely and efficiently according to industry standards
• Maintain continuous plant performance and prescribed plant out-put by monitoring and responding to changes in operating conditions and system load demands
• Provide complete and effective shift turn-over to on-coming shift
• Perform routine maintenance work such as painting, HVAC maintenance, basic plumbing, mechanical systems inspection, monitoring of building systems, tracking and reporting of preventative tasks for all WSC buildings
• On an on-going basis, be up-to-date with; plant conditions by reviewing the operations communication binder, work orders, log book, shift turn over reports, plant control systems, or other communication protocols as directed or required
• Respond to emergency situations, resolving immediate safety and/or operational concerns to ensure minimal work interruption and safe operations
• Assist with daily preparation, repairs and maintenance of the Track sliding surface including: shoveling, sweeping, spritzing, slushing, and scraping
• Maintain safe access to public areas by participating in snow removal duties as required
• Sled transportation and/or guest shuttle driving
• Ensure that all WorkSafeBC and Technical Safety BC requirements are met
• Support all WSL departments in the execution of WSC programs including domestic and international competitions
• Adhere to all operational and safety procedures including wearing PPE when required
• Assist in general up-keep of the Whistler Sliding Centre and support WSL departments in the execution of WSC programs including domestic and international competitions

• Assist team with other duties as assigned or required

Position Requirements
Education/Experience
• College/University/Trades education with relevant certifications
• Certificate of Qualification for Refrigeration Systems, Refrigeration Operators Certificate, or higher required in the province of BC
• 2-3 years of relevant experience required as a Refrigeration Operator
• Knowledge of plant instrumentation and control system ( i.e. Delta Programs) preferred
• Working knowledge of a refrigeration plant, including ammonia refrigeration systems, procedures, equipment, maintenance, proper operating conditions, and HVAC systems preferred
• General knowledge of the Whistler Sliding Centre venue, and the sports of Bobsleigh, Luge, Skeleton, as well as high performance training an asset
• Valid Class 5 BC driver’s license mandatory
• Valid Class 4 BC driver’s license an asset

Skills
• Analytical and problem solving skills required
• Proficient computer skills and working knowledge of MS Office programs including Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Proven ability to take on additional responsibilities without guidance
• Ability to work well as part of a team as well as unsupervised
• Good written and verbal communication skills as well as good interpersonal skills
• Willingness to assist other team members (perhaps outside the department) as needed and requested
• Passion for exceptional customer service is essential

Physical Requirements
• Ability to work outdoors in variable winter weather conditions
• Ability to stand for long periods of time
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
• Comfortable working in confined spaces and elevated heights
• Ability to distinguish colours for monitoring alarms on all equipment, tools, and computers
• Ability to wear and work while wearing a full face respirator

Salary/Wage

$24.00 to $27.00 per hour
