Job Description

Whistler Olympic Park is a world-class destination for outdoor recreation activities & Nordic sports, located just south of Whistler in the stunning Callaghan Valley. Established for the 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games, the Park’s incredible facilities are now enjoyed by both high-performance athletes and recreational guests alike.

Managing Director, Whistler Olympic Park (WOP), as a member of the Whistler Sport Legacies (WSL) Senior Leadership Team, plays an important role in implementing strategic direction as a not-for-profit sport organization, and by providing leadership and direction to all functional areas within the Park.

Responsible for venue program development as well as the development and management of the venue business plan and operational budget. Role focus includes ensuring quality delivery of the Nordic sports, recreational programing, camping, and third-party activities in accordance with WLS’s mission, vision, and values. Regular Full Time position requires flexibility to assist the team with other activities or initiatives including flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

• As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, take on a leadership role in representing the organization’s mission, vision, and values
• Provide leadership and direction in the day-to-day WOP operations
• Prioritize sport within a successful business model
• Foster a strong culture of health & safety; work with Human Resources and Safety to ensure all WorkSafeBC and Technical Safety BC requirements are met
• Working with WSL and WOP colleagues develop and champion the WOP business and strategic plans
• Contribute to the WSL strategic plan and overall objectives of WSL as part of an integrated management team
• Lead the development and implementation of the WOP event strategy in collaboration with sport partners and stakeholders
• Manage WOP stakeholder and business relationships
• Actively participate in the development of the WSL business plan with specific expertise in the WOP
• Develop and manage an annual business plan and overall budget for WOP
• Oversee the development of and approve detailed operational plans for functional areas and ensure that all work is conducted in accordance with the approved budgets
• Champion and contribute to WSL corporate policies and procedures and oversee the development of WOP policies and procedures
• Responsible for building and managing an effective team; including hiring, delegation of work, managing performance objectives, employee recognition, communication, and resolving issues as they arise
• Oversee departments, venues, sports/areas, and third part vendors at WOP
• Provide leadership and direction in the delivery of the Nordic sport and amateur sport programs
• Develop and maintain meaningful relationships and partnerships that support WSL’s strategic plan
• Maintain a strong relationship with both International Sports Federations (IFs), International Biathlon Union (IBU) Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS), relevant National Sport Organizations (NSOs), and Provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs) for the purpose of event hosting and sport growth
• Attend and observe international sporting events and IF meetings as necessary and directed
• Develop effective WOP revenue generation programs and profit centres, which may include outdoor recreation, tours, group functions, filming and for-profit sport events
• Manage information flow to Senior Leadership Team regarding WOP venue operations and information to colleagues regarding WSL operations
• Responsible for the scheduling, planning and organization of international and national sport events in cooperation with NSO, PSO and IF
• Ensure open and transparent communication with user groups; organize and participate in regular Nordic sport and operational meetings
• Work collaboratively with other WSL Managers who are responsible for the delivery of services to the venue (i.e. maintenance, guest services, sales, marketing, volunteers, IT, etc.)
• Coordinate and manage external operational issues regarding WOP
• Develop detailed WOP operational plans
• Carry out Whistler Sport Legacies’ customer service philosophy: AIM (all interactions matter)
• Assist team with other duties as assigned or needed

Leadership
• Responsible for directing and managing colleagues with emphasis on the following areas:
o Position Description review, recruitment and selection
o Orientation and ongoing training
o Adherence to WSL policies and procedures
o Creation of departmental policies and procedures
o Performance management
o Succession planning
o Management of appropriate partners/vendors

Position Requirements
Education/Experience
• Diploma, certificate or degree in a related field required (e.g., sport management, business administration, etc.) or equivalent combination of education and experience required
• Previous experience in the design, development and management of a Nordic facility required
• Experience developing and managing an operational budget required
• Management, supervisory, leadership and interpersonal skills and experience required
• Experience and established relationship with the IFs and relevant NSOs and PSOs preferred
• Knowledge of the IFs and IOC structure, requirements and rules preferred
• Experience working with technical officials and large number of volunteers required
• Experience in business and product development required
• Previous strategic planning experience required
• Previous business planning experience required

• Community Involvement: Solid understanding of the local and sport community, and how partnerships are developed, nurtured, strengthened, and cares about the region

• Ability to work extended hours during key activities of the organization
• Strong cross-country skiing abilities

Languages
• Fluency in English required
• Fluency in French an asset

Salary/Wage

100,000.00 plus per year
