This role researches, develops, and conducts educational programs for visitors to parks and conservation areas.  Educational programs may include nature walks, theatre presentations, or bulletins and pamphlets. Park Interpreters are always studying different aspects of their environment and sharing what they learn.  They may also participate in community outreach and fundraising initiatives related to the park.

Responsibilities

  • Designing and conducting interpretive activities in parks, conservation areas, and historic sites
  • Researching and creating interpretive material such as signs, booklets, and multi-media presentations
  • Creating awareness of the need to protect and restore historic and natural sites
  • Assisting with planning and coordinating special events and fundraising campaigns
  • Assisting with developing proposals for additional interpretive programs, including audience, cost, equipment, material, staffing, and safety concerns
  • Conducting outreach presentations, for example in hospitals, libraries, seniors’ centres, schools, and other community groups
  • Communicating park and site issues for long-term management planning by way of open houses and public consultations
  • Advising visitors of park rules and regulations while ensuring for their safety

  • Outgoing, social, excellent public speaker
  • High energy and enthusiasm for working with youth and public audiences
  • Natural curiosity and passion for teaching
  • Strong research and planning skills
  • Knowledge and passion for the park history, flora, fauna, animal life, etc.
  • Ability to work in an indoor and outdoor environment, on evenings and weekends
  • Degree or diploma in natural science, outdoor recreation, environmental studies or equivalent is an asset
