Job Title:        Apprentice Heavy Duty Mechanic
Location:        Whitewater Ski Resort
Department:  Outdoor Operations
Reports to:     Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor
Employment Status/Type: Year-Round. Full Time
Compensation: DOE

JOB SYNOPSIS:

Under the direction and supervision of the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor, the Apprentice Heavy Duty Mechanic will learn and develop the skills required to maintain and repair heavy-duty vehicles and equipment. This position is responsible for assisting in the daily, weekly, and annual maintenance of Snow Cats and other heavy duty fleet equipment (Excavator, Loader, and Skid Steer) at the resort. They will work closely with shop staff to ensure all equipment is maintained to the highest and safest standard to ensure smooth mountain operations.

The Apprentice Heavy Duty Mechanic will be a champion of Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures as well as promote a positive work environment.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist in diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing a wide range of heavy-duty equipment around the resort.
Assist in diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing a wide range of small engine equipment around the resort such as Snow Mobiles, Quads and Side by Sides.
Perform routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication, and inspections according to the manufacturer’s guidelines and established maintenance schedules.
Learn and apply troubleshooting techniques to identify and resolve mechanical issues efficiently and effectively.
Assist in the repair and replacement of faulty components and parts, including engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
Clean and organize the shop area, ensuring tools and equipment are properly stored and maintained.
Collaborate with other maintenance team members to ensure timely completion of repairs and maintenance tasks.
Keep accurate records of maintenance repair activities, including work performed, parts used, and time spent on each task.
Attend training sessions and workshops to enhance technical knowledge and skills related to heavy-duty mechanics and ski hill equipment maintenance
Adhere to all environmental and regulatory guidelines pertaining to the maintenance and disposal of hazardous materials.
Assist supervisor with monitoring and maintaining parts inventory. Bring forward when parts are low in inventory so they can be replenished.
Work overtime and in adverse weather conditions, to quickly repair broken equipment and move it off the mountain.
Occasionally be on call overnight in the event of a breakdown.
Ensure all Whitewater policies are adhered to as outlined in the current Employee Handbook as well as all applicable WCB regulations.
Assist with training operators in the use of snow cat and snow removal equipment.
Operate equipment as required.
Ensure operators fill out daily logs accurately.
Assist in emergency situations.
Using a sustainable approach in daily operations, planning, and development.
Work to achieve department Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to assist in achieving organizational goals.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS / EDUCATION:
Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent required.
Currently enrolled in a recognized apprenticeship program for Heavy Duty Mechanics is considered an asset.
Valid Class 5 Driver’s License required with clean drivers abstract.
Previous experience working in a shop Required
Snow Cat mechanical experience is an asset.
Experience operating heavy equipment is considered an asset.
Good working knowledge of the current WCB regulations is an asset.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Strong leadership, communication, management, administrative and personnel skills.
Must be a team player and able to work well with others while maintaining a calm and positive attitude, sometimes during high stress.
Good physical condition. Capable of performing manual labor, lifting up to 50 pounds, ability to lift heavy objects and frequently walking on uneven ground & comfortable.
Working at heights occasionally
Ability to operate snow mobiles, heavy equipment, ATV’s and 4×4 trucks in a safe and responsible manner.
Advanced skiing or snowboarding ability is an asset.
Ability to work outside for extended periods in adverse weather conditions.
Must be willing to travel to the mountain and work weekends and holidays as required.
Self-motivated, mature, dependable, timely and able to work well with others.
Are proficient with Microsoft Office and other basic computer systems and applications
