Job Description

Whistler Sliding Centre is a world-class bobsleigh, skeleton and luge facility located above Whistler Village on the side of Blackcomb Mountain. True to its mission to grow sport, the venue is not only used for training and competition by athletes from beginner to world class level, but it is also the only place in Canada where public can try bobsleigh and skeleton to slide like an Olympian with no experience required.

Assistant Coach, Luge and Skeleton has a predominant luge focus while assisting the development of provincial programs for Whistler Sport Legacies (WSL) at the Whistler Sliding Centre (WSC). The primary program focus is to deliver on WSL, provincial, and national objectives as determined by the organization and other sport stakeholders.

Upcoming casual winter season role requires flexibility to assist the team with other activities or initiatives, including the requirement to be available evenings and weekends as required. Additional role may be available to augment hours reaching temporary full time – dependent on skillset – for discussion with hiring Manager.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

• Provide sport specific coaching expertise to all affiliated groups and coaches
• Work with the Head Coach to manage the training of sliding athletes as required to meet program targets
• Assist in the delivery of luge and skeleton sport programs
• Deliver effective training for beginner/novice luge and skeleton athletes under the guidance of the Head Coach
• Monitor and review athlete performance, and coordinate the provision of feedback to athletes for improvement
• Provide logistic and technical support, as well as athlete mentoring
• Ensure the welfare of the athletes is maintained by making sure they are aware of the support structures available to them, and encourage a harmonious team environment by liaising with all team members and other support staff
• Understanding that:
o WSL has the ability to contract Sport Coaches to other stakeholders without additional remuneration
o Sport Coaches are not at liberty to personally sub-contract their services to any stakeholder without prior permission
• Identify, prepare and ensure safety of equipment and training sites
• Assist with athlete recruitment, retention and development for sliding sport programs in conjunction with the WSC Sport Department
• Support the delivery of WSC program initiatives, WSL multi-sport programming, and new sport business initiatives
• Proactively continue to evolve Sliding Sport programs in the Sea to Sky Corridor in conjunction with WSC, WSL and other regional sport partners
• Ensure effective communication with parents, guests, athletes, coaches, and officials
• Ensure the effective information flow between the WSC Sport Department, WSC staff, WSC leadership team, other WSL departments, venues, colleagues, volunteers, and contractors
• Champion and adhere to all WSL corporate policies, procedures, and contribute to the development of WSC policies and procedures
• Carry out Whistler Sport Legacies’ customer service philosophy AIM: All Interactions Matter
• Assist the team with other duties as assigned or required

Position Requirements
Education/Experience
• Experience in sport coaching and participation in a sliding sport required
• In-training coaching certification status required
• Technical understanding of the sliding sports
• Proven management, supervisory and leadership experience required
• Demonstrated ability to work with developmental athletes
• Knowledge of sport development required
• Knowledge of the Long Term Athlete Development Model an asset
• Technical experience in sled building, preparation and maintenance an asset
• Knowledge of the IF structure, requirements, and rules preferred
• Experience and established relationships with BCS, BCBSA and IBSF an asset
• Readiness to travel and work domestically and internationally as required, and acknowledge that odd hours of work will be required on various occasions
• Class 4 Driver’s License or Class 4 Unrestricted Driver’s License an asset
• Satisfactory vulnerable sector check is mandatory prior to commencement of employment

Physical Requirements
• Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions for extended periods of time
• Ability to stand for long periods of time
