Job Description

The Fernie Snowmobile Association is seeking qualified snow cat groomer operators for the upcoming 2024-2025 winter season. Reporting to the Grooming and Maintenance Committees, our snow cat groomer operators will play an integral role in the provision of a safe, enjoyable backcountry trail network for residents and visitors in the Elk Valley. The FSA provides over 5000km a year of high-quality winter trail grooming across 5 managed snowmobile recreation areas. This position requires an experienced operator who can work independently in a variable, backcountry, winter work environment while adhering to safe work procedures and organization guidelines.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Hours
This seasonal position requires a flexible shift pattern and hours to meet trail use needs. Hours will vary between 30 – 40 hours per week on a 3-4 day / week scheduled grooming pattern. Shifts may be adjusted due to weather and trail use needs.

Responsibilities
● Adhere to safe work procedures, standard operating procedures, and safety legislation
● Perform equipment inspections and basic equipment maintenance
● Reporting unusual conditions, noises, or trail concerns to Committee Leads in a timely fashion
● Complete accurate logs and grooming activity reports
● Safe operation of grooming equipment (BR 350, BR 180, tiller, c-bar, front blade)
● Effective communications as a representative of the Fernie Snowmobile Association
● Other tasks as required such as inspection of cabins and staging facilities, collection of garbage

Qualifications
● Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 at minimum
● Valid driver’s license, ability to drive on winter backcountry road to groomer storage facility
● Must be 18 years of age or older
● Able to work night shifts and sit for long periods of time, up to 8 hours
● Experience with radio communications, personal locator beacons
● Previous experience operating snow cat groomer REQUIRED
● Mechanical aptitude with experience in performance of light maintenance and troubleshooting
● Ability to work in an isolated, outdoor, winter environment with variable weather conditions and
terrain

Salary/Wage

$25-35 / hour
