Job Description

Whistler Sliding Centre is a world-class bobsleigh, skeleton and luge facility located above Whistler Village on the side of Blackcomb Mountain. True to its mission to grow sport, the venue is not only used for training and competition by athletes from beginner to world class level, but it is also the only place in Canada where public can try bobsleigh and skeleton to slide like an Olympian with no experience required.

Sport Timing Operator provides administrative and delivery support for all sport and public programs at Whistler Sliding Centre. Responsibilities include monitoring camera and communication systems to formulate and issue clearances to athletes, coaches, staff, and visitors while executing track safety protocols.

Winter season 2024/2025 commences October 15 for: Casual, Part Time, or Full Time role – requires ability to work weekends and evenings.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

• Co-ordinate Track usage including slider safety, track clearances, pace of sessions, and interfacing with Officials and Guest Services personnel
• Monitor and use control and timing systems including cameras, public address system, intercom, timing, scoreboards, and emergency alarms
• Timing of and preparing results for training, public, and race sessions
• Assist with protocol implementation and development
• Regular inspections and maintenance of control and timing systems
• Tower documentation including run sheets, log book, statistic compilation and incident tracking
• Ice maintenance support
• Provide event support including timing of domestic and international competitions
• Consistently monitor all track activity and communicate with track crew to ensure efficient operation(s)
• Greet visitors (athletes, coaches, public), and assist them to register for the product/service of their choice (e.g. assist athletes with sign-in process; assist the general public with the purchase of appropriate tour and/or ride products)
• Process public activity information requests and bookings by phone and/or email and send confirmations
• Use a Point of Sale system to process track fees, rides, and merchandise payments and process end of day cash reconciliation
• Facilitate sport user group registration including processing fees and documentation as required
• Foster a strong culture of health & safety; work with Human Resources and Safety to ensure all WorkSafeBC and Technical Safety BC requirements are met
• Assist with race office duties as required
• Deliver orientation sessions for athletes and public programs (both in the Guest Services building and track-side when assisting with the delivery of public tours and rides)
• Facilitate public and sport programs (Bobsleigh and Skeleton Sport Experience).
Duties include, but are not limited to:
o Gather and process participant information and waivers
o Equipment safety inspections, e.g., helmets
o Lead program safety presentation
o Maintain radio communications with Control Tower
o Shuttle/walk participants to start and return
o Safely unload sled into ready position
o Safely load guests into sled
o Recap safety components and final check of guest equipment and comfort level
o Assist pilots at Finish Dock, and assist guests to unload safely
o Safely load sled onto truck
• Compile and submit athlete and public sliding start lists to Control Tower, and distribute sliding results to athletes and public sliders
• Adhere to all operational and safety procedures including wearing PPE’s when required including ‘creepers’ while on-ice
• Set up and operate camera for guest photos
• Record track statistics for venue and specific sport run volume
• Assist in general up-keep of all areas, including the daily set up of equipment and displays indoors and outdoors
• Assist with the execution of special events as required

Position Requirements
Education/Experience
• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Minimum requirement must be 19 years of age
• Guest Service experience required
• Valid Class 5 BC driver’s license required
• Knowledge of sport timing and racing protocols an asset
• Proven experience with radio protocol an asset
• General knowledge of the Whistler Sliding Centre venue, and the sports of Bobsleigh, Luge, Skeleton, as well as high performance training an asset
• Willingness to become a certified official in all sliding disciplines an asset

• Strong organizational skills
• Proficient computer skills
• Excellent communication skills: oral and written
• Willingness to assist other team members (at times outside of the department) as needed and requested
• Passion for exceptional customer service is essential

Languages
• Fluency in English required

Physical Requirements
• Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions
• Ability to stand for long periods of time
• Ability to regularly lift 50lbs

Salary/Wage

$22.00 to $25.00 per hour
