Job Description
We are seeking an enthusiastic and culturally competent Visitor Centre Manager to lead our tourism initiatives in Powell River and the qathet Region. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in tourism, community engagement, a deep respect for Indigenous cultures, and a knowledge of local tourism related assets and amenities.
Responsibilities & Qualifications
Key Responsibilities:
• Leadership & Management:
o Oversee the daily operations of the Visitor Centre, ensuring a welcoming and informative experience for all visitors.
o Train, supervise, and support a team of staff and volunteers.
o Manage budgets, schedules, and resources effectively.
• Community & Stakeholder Engagement:
o Develop and maintain partnerships with Destination BC, local businesses, tourism operators, and community organizations.
o Act as a liaison between the Visitor Centre and Tla’amin Nation, City of Powell River, and qathet Regional District, fostering strong relationships and ensuring the inclusion of Tla’amin cultural perspectives in all relevant activities.
• Cultural Competency & Representation:
o Demonstrate a strong understanding of, and respect for, Tla’amin culture, history, and language.
o Work closely with Tla’amin Nation representatives to develop culturally appropriate tourism content, programs, and displays.
o Promote cultural awareness and sensitivity among staff, volunteers, and visitors.
• Tourism Promotion & Development:
o Develop and implement strategies to attract visitors to Powell River and the qathet Region.
o Design and deliver promotional materials, visitor guides, and marketing campaigns.
o Organize and participate in events, tours, and community activities.
• Board Governance:
o Responsible for leading Tourism Powell River in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors.
o Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.
o Responsible for the organization and preparation for board and committee meetings.
• Financial Performance and Viability:
o Working closely with the Board’s elected Treasurer and auditor, responsible for submission of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements.
o Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.
o Responsible for fundraising, grant applications, and seeking other resources necessary to support Tourism Powell River’s mission.
• Organization Mission and Strategy:
o Responsible for strategic planning to ensure the Tourism Powell River can successfully fulfill its mission.
o Responsible for implementation of Tourism Powell River’s programs that carry out the organization’s mission.
Qualifications:
• Education & Experience:
o A degree, diploma or certificate in Tourism Management, Business Administration, Cultural Studies, or a related field.
o Minimum of 3 years of experience in tourism management, community engagement, or a similar role.
o Experience working with Indigenous communities, preferably within a tourism or cultural context.
o Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
• Skills & Competencies:
o Strong leadership and team management abilities.
o Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
o Demonstrated cultural competency, particularly in relation to Indigenous cultures.
o Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with diverse stakeholders.
o Proficiency in digital marketing, social media, and other tourism promotion tools.
Salary/Wage
$39,000 to $42,500
